Unit Five: Enrolling in a College or UniversityThis is a featured page

Conceptual:

Unit Five address four main questions:

  1. What should I look for in a college or university?
    • Importance of Choosing a Home Institution
  2. How do I register for courses?
    • Use of the OhioLearns! Web site to register for a course, degree, or certificate and make contact with someone from the course/degree granting institution for further assistance
  3. How do I find out about financial aid?
    • Various types of financial aid, associated Web sites, and who to contact for further assistance
  4. What if I transfer to another school in Ohio?
    • Transfer issues and introduces CAS (Course Applicability System)

Informational:

  1. Selecting a “home institution” is critical if a student is interested in completing a certificate or degree program. A student may be pursuing a certificate or degree that is not offered at a distance. If they wish to use OhioLearns! to find a course, they can identify the distance course, but they must be careful to check with their “home institution” to verify that the distance course will transfer back to their home institution and to the academic program that they are pursuing.

  2. Students can use links within the OhioLearns! transition pages to register for courses or programs and find institutional contact information, or they can contact OLN Regional Coordinators for assistance. If students sign-up for an E-Guide at the end of Unit Six, these individuals will also assist them.

  3. Inquiries about financial aid that require information not provided at the Web sites should be directed to representatives from the student’s home institution.

  4. While CAS is a wonderful tool for acquiring information about specific course transfer and articulation issues and viewing program requirements, few institutions in Ohio are currently participating fully in the service. If students are seeking transfer and articulation information from an institution that is not participating in CAS, they should be referred to an academic advisor or to the institution’s Web site for assistance. This information can be found in OhioLearns! on the course or degree transition page.

Relational:

  1. Students may want the instructor to help them decide on which home institution to select. OLN maintains neutrality on the subject of which institution is “best.” Efforts should be directed to using probing and open-ended questions to help students consider a variety of facts and perspectives that will enable them to make a decision that suits them best.
