Unit One is designed to help students focus on their motivation for pursuing additional education. Both career/economic and personal growth is mentioned as broad possible reasons. The exercises in this unit are intended to help students clarify their reasons for pursuing additional education.
Unit One provides a definition of e-learning.
Informational:
Unit One introduces students to the first pre-test.
Students will begin using tools in this unit that they might encounter in future e-learning courses. For example, tools such as PDF documents, PowerPoint files and Discussion Board Postings will be introduced.
Unit One asks the student to use the Discussion Board. The following is a copy of the assignment, which is located in the E 4 ME course under Unit One Assignment: Autobiography.
The final question in the Unit One Quiz provides students an option to cancel enrollment in E 4 ME. If a student chooses to cancel enrollment, she/he will be automatically directed to a final survey of the course. At this time, the student is also given the opportunity to re-register for a future E 4 ME class or to speak with an OLN Regional Coordinator. For tracking purposes, the instructor should label the students who choose to cancel enrollment at this stage of the course as “Opted Out.” This choice is located in the Status field of the gradebook.
Relational:
Reassure students that they can have a variety of reasons for furthering their education.
The instructor should post an autobiography on the Discussion Board by noon of the first day of the course. The instructor’s autobiography should serve as a sample for the students to follow, and it should allow them to get to know the instructor better. Please be sure to clearly mark your autobiography as a posting from the instructor—for example, title the post “Instructor Autobiography.” In addition to posting an autobiography, the instructor should encourage students to respond to two additional student autobiographies, with the goal of developing a sense of community during the course.
The instructor should send an e-mail at the end of the first week to those students who have not yet begun the course. This message should be sent using e-mail external to the course. The following is a sample message.
