Close the popup window
8. Click on "E 4 ME (Course)"
9. Now, you are in your classroom

When you first enter the classroom, take a look at the items under
"Orientation", which is found in the middle of the screen. We recommend
viewing the "Navigation" video located under "Orientation Videos" before
beginning the class.

After viewing these items, return to the classroom "Home Page" by clicking on
the link in the upper left corner of your screen. The classroom "Home Page"
gives you access to the E 4 ME "Course Content" (located in the middle of the
screen) and to messages from your instructor, which are found under "Mail"
and "Discussions" in the upper middle section of the screen.

Although you are taking a self-paced course, you are asked to complete on
average one unit per week. For the actual pace and outline of the E 4 ME
course, please refer to the "Course Schedule", which is found on the left
side of the classroom "Home Page".

If you need technical support (with password access, or problems accessing E 4 ME) prior to getting into your course, send an e-mail to e4meohio@oln.org

After successfully getting into your E 4 ME course, all future mail for your class will be sent within the tools of the E 4 ME course, and your instructor will be available to help you. In the meantime, please be sure to double-check your personal e-mail settings
to ensure that any messages sent to you outside of the E 4 ME course will
not be filtered by your e-mail program. For additional information about
this, take a look at "E-Mail Filters" located under "Orientation" on the class
"Home Page".

Good luck and enjoy the class!

All the best,

The Ohio Learning Network

Home page

OLN E 4 ME Development Team

Unit One: An Introduction to E-Learning

Conceptually:

Unit One is designed to help students focus on their motivation for pursuing additional education. Both career/economic and personal growth is mentioned as broad possible reasons. The exercises in this unit are intended to help students clarify their reasons for pursuing additional education.

Unit One provides a definition of e-learning.

  Informational:

Unit One introduces students to the first pre-test.

Students will begin using tools in this unit that they might encounter in future e-learning courses. For example, tools such as PDF documents, PowerPoint files and Discussion Board Postings will be introduced.

Unit One asks the student to use the Discussion Board. The following is a copy of the assignment, which is located in the E 4 ME course under Unit One Assignment: Autobiography.

Example: Copy of the assignment, which is located in the E 4 ME course under Unit One Assignment: Autobiography.

The final question in the Unit One Quiz provides students an option to cancel enrollment in E 4 ME. If a student chooses to cancel enrollment, she/he will be automatically directed to a final survey of the course. At this time, the student is also given the opportunity to re-register for a future E 4 ME class or to speak with an OLN Regional Coordinator. For tracking purposes, the instructor should label the students who choose to cancel enrollment at this stage of the course as “Opted Out.” This choice is located in the Status field of the gradebook.

  Relational:

Reassure students that they can have a variety of reasons for furthering their education.

Reassure students that they only need to have basic computer skills to take an e-learning course. If they are unsure, direct them E-mail at a Glance, Mouse Exercises, or Office 2000 Tutorials.

The instructor should post an autobiography on the Discussion Board by noon of the first day of the course. The instructor’s autobiography should serve as a sample for the students to follow, and it should allow them to get to know the instructor better. Please be sure to clearly mark your autobiography as a posting from the instructor—for example, title the post “Instructor Autobiography.” In addition to posting an autobiography, the instructor should encourage students to respond to two additional student autobiographies, with the goal of developing a sense of community during the course.

Examples: Instructors' autobiography.

The instructor should send an e-mail at the end of the first week to those students who have not yet begun the course. This message should be sent using e-mail external to the course. When you first log in to the course, on the “Home Page,” you will find a “Course Schedule” with a suggested timeframe for taking the course. Depending on your schedule, you may want to move at a faster or slower pace, but keep in mind that this class ends on DATE.

As you enter the classroom, please remember to click on “Orientation” on the Home Page and review the “Computer Requirements” and the “Navigation” video, which is located within “Orientation Videos.”

To get us started, I would like everyone to finish Unit One and post an autobiography on the “Discussions” board no later than DATE. As you read others’ autobiographies please comment, just as you would in a classroom or at a meeting.

If you need technical help, be sure to take a look at the FAQs (frequently asked questions) at:
http://www.e4meohio.org/e4_faq.php
and send an e-mail to me or to Gail Peters using the “Mail” tool in your course. To practice this, send Gail an e-mail now and include me in the "Send To" field. You will find both of our names and e-mail addresses listed under the “Browse for Recipients” button.

Good luck with the course and please let me know if I can help you in any way.

All the best,
Instructor’s Name

Example 2:

Hello and welcome to your E 4 ME course!

You made it!

My name is FIRST LAST and I will be your instructor during this four week course. I hope you find it to be an enjoyable experience and a useful opportunity to learn a lot of information about online learning.

This course is designed to be self-paced. You can work at your own speed and at a time convenient for you. When you first log in to the course, on the “Home Page,” you will see an area titled “Course Schedule.” This schedule suggests a timeframe for you to follow in order to complete the course on time—keep in mind that this class ends on DATE. Depending on your schedule, you may want to work at a faster or slower pace. Try to log on everyday if you can but, if you cannot, then make sure you do so several times a week. Otherwise, you will start to fall behind.

One of the first things you should do before beginning the Course Content is to click on “Orientation” on the Home Page and review the “Computer Requirements” and the “Navigation” video, which is located within “Orientation Videos.” This will help you make sure that your computer is set up properly and it will also familiarize you with how the course works.

In addition to reading through the course content and doing the assignments and quizzes, please be sure to check your e-mail and the discussion area frequently. E-mail and discussion are the two primary means of communication in this course. If you are reading this message, then you already know how to check your mail. There will also be an assignment in the Introduction section of the course content that will require you to send me an e-mail with answers to some questions.

After the e-mail assignment, in Unit One you will be asked to post your autobiography in the discussion area—please complete this no later than DATE. When you click on “Discussions” at the top of the page, you will find that I have already posted my autobiography. Please feel free to respond and/or comment to mine and to the other students who will be posting their autobiographies. In an online course, you do not get to meet the other students in your class face-to-face. The discussion area is a great way for students to get to know each other, and you may find that you have things in common with some of the other students. You will also find that they are just as busy and active as you are. Remember, the discussion area is seen by everyone in the course but, when you send an e-mail, only the person(s) you send it to can see it.

If at anytime during the course you have technical problems or have difficulty accessing information, be sure to take a look at the FAQs (frequently asked questions) at:
http://www.e4meohio.org/e4_faq.php
and send an e-mail to me or to Gail Peters. She will also be available to assist you. In fact, it would be a good idea to send Gail an e-mail at the start of the course just to say “hi” and introduce yourself. You will find her listed among the list of students when you click on the “Browse for Recipients” button in your e-mail message. This is also where you will find my name and e-mail address. All e-mail is “internal” to the course. We will not be using external e-mail.

Good luck with the course and please let me know if I can help you in any way.

All the best,
Instructor’s Name

Home page

Instructor's E-mail at the end of the First Week to Those Students Who Have Not Begun the Course

Greetings Name,

Welcome to E 4 ME! I would recommend that you view the “Navigation” video before beginning the course. Please use the other videos as a resource, by viewing them as needed. If you need technical help, send an e-mail to Katie Smith using the “Mail” tool in your course. All mail for the course will be done within the tools in the E 4 ME course, but, just in case, please double check your personal e-mail settings to be certain any messages sent to you outside of the E 4 ME course will not be filtered by your e-mail program (for example, if you are a Hotmail user, make sure e-mail messages are not sent directly to your “junk” mail folder). Good luck and I'll see you in class.

All the best,
Instructor’s name

Connie Shrivers suggestions:

  duana5@localnet.com

Hello duana:

I noticed you haven't signed on to the E4Me class you signed up for this month. Click “Next” at the bottom of the task pane.

Select Starting Document: Choose “Use current document.” Click Next at the bottom of the task pane.

Select Recipients: Choose “Use an existing list.”

Then click “Browse” The “Select Data Source” Window will open. Navigate to the class list you received from Gail. Select the list, then click open. If a “Select Table” window opens, select “Sheet 1$” and click OK.

This will open the “Mail Merge Recipients” window. In this window you have the option of selecting the students to whom you wish to send the reminder. This is helpful if you have several students who have signed on and are working through the course because, of course, they do not need to receive the reminder.

Once you have selected the recipients you wish to merge, click “OK.”

Then, click “Next” at the bottom of the task pane.

Assuming Gail uses the same headings that Katie has used previously, the Mail Merge Document should have the correct fields already in the document that I am sending.

It’s really easy to insert “Mail Merge Fields” if you are using your own brand new document.

  a. To start, I place my cursor before the beginning of the letter to insert the student’s email address.
b. Click “More Items…” in the task pane. The “Insert Merge Field” Window pops up.
c. Select “email” then click “insert” and then “close.”
d. Next, place your cursor after “Hello” in your letter. Here is where you would want to insert the student’s first name.
e. Click “More Items…” in the task pane. The “Insert Merge Field” Window pops up.
f. Select “firstname” then click “insert” and then “close.”
g. Place your cursor after User Name:
h. Click “More Items…” in the task pane. The “Insert Merge Field” Window pops up.
i. Select “id” then click “insert” and then “close.”
j. Place your cursor after Password:
k. Click “More Items…” in the task pane. The “Insert Merge Field” Window pops up.
l. Select “Password” then click “insert” and then “close.”

This would be an excellent time to be sure the “E4ME_247_November_07” information is correct if you choose to include that in the letter.

Click “Next” at the bottom of the task pane. This gives you a chance to preview your letter. If there’s anything that doesn’t look right, just click the “Previous” link at the bottom of the task pane and make any corrections necessary.

Click “Next” at the bottom of the task pane.

This brings up the “Complete the Merge” window in the task pane. Click on the link “Edit Individual Letters.” This will bring up the “Merge to New Document” window. Select “All,” then click “OK.”

A new document will be created called “Letters1” that has a page for each student with their individual sign on information on it.

I recommend reviewing this document, mainly to make Proper Names capital since so many students do not bother to use capital letters, or use them exclusively. (grrr…)

The final step is to copy the first letter, paste it into your email, then simply cut the email address and put it into the “TO” box in your email. Send email, and repeat as necessary.

Save the Reminder Mail Merge Document, but I personally do not save the “Letters1” document with the merge information.

When written out like this it sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn’t once you have done it once or twice. If you use Outlook, you can actually merge directly to Outlook and it will automatically create individual messages. (I don’t use Outloook.)

Any questions, please just shoot me an email at cshriver@wscc.edu.

J

Example: E 4 ME Technology Support Welcome Message for Discussion Board

Greetings E 4 ME Learners,

My name is Gail Peters. The goal of the course is to offer e-learning as a viable option for potential students looking to start or continue their education. To achieve a course objective of taking students through an e-learning experience, the content is presented using e-learning delivery methods.

OLN staff, as well as staff from other organizations associated directly or indirectly with higher education in Ohio, are the instructors for this course. This training is designed to assist non-OLN staff, who may not be familiar with the general context or specific information pertinent to advise students in this course about e-learning options.

The course consists of an introduction and 5 units that address:

Introduction to Course: Course goals

An Introduction to e-Learning: Value of acquiring more education; Definitions of e-learning; and Course technical requirements

Is E-learning for Me?: Students’ fit with e-learning; e-Learning and higher education vocabulary; Students’ time for e-learning; and Time management resources

Planning Your Education: Navigation of OhioLearns! catalog to see courses, certificates, and degrees available through Ohio higher educational institutions; and Choosing an Occupation

Assessing students’ interests and skills

Reviewing the relationship between education and careers

Enrolling in a College or University: Home institution choice and course registration; Financial aid information; and Transfer information

Next Steps: Students’ feedback of information learned during the course; and Course evaluation

Units in the course serve as the central organizing component for this manual. They are integrated with the training schema proposed by Wes Habley (1995).
Habley’s training schema includes three major areas for training.

Concept components: These topics encompass what instructors need to understand about the students and their environment

Information components: These are topics that the instructor needs to be knowledgeable about, including familiar items, such as institutional objectives and goals, program and course offerings, referral sources and services.

Relationship components: These are behaviors that the instructor needs to demonstrate in order to be effective in teaching students, including demonstrating an attitude of warmth and welcome, asking questions that invite students’ involvement in discussion, and helping students use effective decision-making strategies.

Habley, W. “Advisor Training in the Context of Teaching Enhancement Center” In R. This special designed E 4 ME course (E 4 ME P) is only offered to incarcerated inmates within Ohio correctional facilities. Those who qualify to take the course have been selected because they are non-violent offenders and are taking the course as their first step in establishing an educational plan.

In most cases, you will not be able to tell if the learner you are working with is a graduate of the E 4 ME or E 4 ME P coures. One distinction is important to remember: those taking the E 4 ME P course took the course in a classroom with an instructor and did not have Internet access.

As with all advisees, your primary means of communication should be through e-mail or an arranged phone conversation using your office phone number. If a face-to-face meeting is arranged, it must be in your office. You should not provide your home phone number or personal e-mail address to any advisee. Using the course transition pages found in OhioLearns! and helping students identify key program or course contacts is the most important way an E-Guide can help a learner start this process. This is discussed in the section Referring Students to Campuses in this E-Guide Wiki.
The Course Applicability System(http://miami.transfer.org/cas/index.jsp) (CAS) is discussed in E 4 ME. Students might be interested in using this tool for help with transfer related issues. CAS provides Course Equivalency Guides, Academic Programs, Courses Offerings, Transfer Course Evaluations, and Degree Audit Reporting in a web environment. Students, faculty, and the interested public can easily retrieve these from the Internet for participating Ohio CAS institutions. Students contemplating a transfer may submit their course work to any institution within the CAS network for evaluation against that institution's academic programs. CAS provides information on courses, course equivalencies, and program requirements at a CAS institution to anyone who accesses a CAS Web site. For students who become a "CAS Member," CAS provides information on how their specific course work will transfer and apply toward a degree at a CAS institution. CAS provides a variety of services at its site. These free services include:

establish a new CAS account

log-in to an existing CAS account

log-in as a guest

review CAS sites outside of Ohio

review the CAS manual for using the site as a student, adviser, or administrator

Home
